Despite the fact that 1999 film The Mummy is regularly considered a “bad” movie I have never met a person who doesn’t like it.
It’s considered bad?!
Like critically just on the border of passable
This upsets me deeply and at the same time makes perfect sense because it’s an obscenely dorky and historically inaccurate movie and yet at the same time it (and The Mummy Returns) is in my list of top ten favorite movies ever. I unashamedly love it so much. When it came out on VHS when I was like 11 or something I watched it literally every day after school.
If I had the time or energy I probably still would. I love this stupid movie to death.
The people who hate it hate it because they’re on the wrong side of the river.
Roger Ebert’s review of this movie is one of my all-time favorite movie reviews.
tl;dr: Three out of four stars. He loves it unironically even as he chronicles everything he finds fault with. “There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it.”
The divide between critics and audiences displayed perfectly here.
